The 2025 Greater Bay Area Youth Climate Summit was held on May 10 at Macao Pui Ching Middle School. The event was organized by our English Department. Guests included Acting Director Tang Iu Man of the Macao Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau, Director Cheang Sek Kit of the Curriculum Development and Assessment Department of the Education and Youth Development Bureau, Former Assistant Director Leung Wing Mo of the Hong Kong Observatory, Associate Professor Li Yongjie of the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Macao, Dr. Saul Chan of the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Macao, Ms. Ruby O, renowned academician and Assistant Vice President of Sustainability and Business Synergy at MGM, Ms. Lok Un Wa, United Nations-certified teacher of sustainable development goals, Assistant Principal Michael Leung of United Christian College (Kowloon East), and Director Maggie Wang of the International Department of the Experimental School Affiliated with Zhuhai No. 1 High School, among others.
The summit opened with a special ribbon-cutting ceremony featuring a ribbon made from recycled plastic bottles, symbolizing our dedication to a circular economy. The ceremony was officiated by Acting Director Tang Iu Man of the Macao Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau, Vice-Principal Ieong Pui Ian of Macao Pui Ching Middle School and various guests. Following the ribbon-cutting ceremony, Professor Li Yongjie delivered the keynote speech, covering such topics as the atmospheric environment, climate change, and carbon neutrality.
Student research presentations marked one of the highlights of the summit and discussed topics including “The environmental impact of climate change on an Arctic archipelago”, “The impact of climate change on migratory bird diversity in the Greater Bay Area”, “The effects of the interactive mechanism of El Niño and Rossby Waves on the climate of South China”, and “Climate change: Coral reef conservation”. The program also featured a student performance of an original song, Save Our World, written by a group of our 7th graders and one 11th grader.
Another highlight of the summit was a roundtable discussion led by Professor Leung Wing Mo, Dr. Saul Chan, Ms. Ruby O, and Ms. Lok Un Wa. The guest speakers engaged with students from Pui Ching and our two sister schools on such topics as "Innovations in climate policy," "Regional cooperation mechanisms," and "Youth action plans". In his closing remarks, Professor Leung pointed out a paradox that our generation has witnessed: “We have turned convenience into a curse, calling it progress, without calculating the cost." He encouraged young people to make changes for the next generation, ensuring a healthier planet for future inhabitants.
At lunchtime, students from the three schools tasted regional flavors together at local restaurants, bonding through food and supporting the local economy. In the afternoon, teachers and students were given a tour of the educational hotel and educational restaurant of the Macao University of Tourism and learned about their sustainable practices.
In recent years, our school has been encouraging students to turn language skills into actionable solutions for real-world problems, allowing them to apply their knowledge beyond the classroom. The Youth Climate Summit is an attempt to transform English education. The event gives students from different regions the opportunity to discuss climate issues in English and inspires youth to take action in the face of global crises.
