First group of students to go on research in North Pole return to Macao 2018-09-20

Teachers and students of Pui Ching visited the North Pole for robotics research with Ocean Ecology Specialist and Polar Researcher Professor Ho Kin Chong.  Pui Ching students have been the first group of students from Macao to conduct research in the North Pole.

After visiting Nouvelle-Calédonie of the Pacific Ocean last year for ocean research, Pui Ching students visited the North Pole this year.  The school’s Ocean Environment Conservation and Exploration Team conducted research with their underwater robots for 10 days in the Svalbard Islands of the North Pole.

After arriving in Longyearbyen of the North Pole, the student researchers obtained their first glacier water quality sample and terrain record and conducted chemical analyses.  They also had the opportunity to conduct micro-organism analyses on the ocean water.  The students used underwater robots to record the water temperature for monitoring purposes.  At the same time, they had to overcome extreme weather and analyze their samples within limited time, all this while adjusting the robots to suit the sampling environment.  The robots in this expedition reached the deepest depth possible and obtained the temperatures along the way.  This success was an inspiration to teachers and students alike and the experience helped them to improve their robots’ data collection ability in different water environments.
